The Healing Power of our Words
My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.
For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:20–23
Can words heal people?
You bet they can.
When speaking of healing and our desire to become healthy and whole people, we need to look at the importance of our words. The Bible says that our words are filled with power - the power of life and death is found in the power of the tongue.
In the above passage from Proverbs, Solomon says that his words can bring healing to their flesh and life to those that find them. This is a powerful statement. The right words spoken to a person could bring them immense healing. That's an amazing thought!
To get the whole picture here though, let's first look at the destructive power of our words. Through the power of our words, we can tear other people down, we can paralyze them in fear, we can degrade, belittle and bully. We can cause death by the power of our tongue.
If you don't believe me, just look at our political landscape today. Both sides are guilty of "mudslinging" which is a fancy way they are talking dirty about their opponent. This year, The Democrat Party has emboldened would-be assassins with their rhetoric, which is shameful. And virtually no one knows what a candidate actually stands for, only what they stand against.
This is a big picture example, but we are guilty of the same malice with our speech. We talk bad about neighbors, family and friends. We speak things out loud that shouldn't be said in secret. We put words to emotions in harmful ways, while ignoring the proper way to deal with things. Our words can truly be destructive.
But...
It doesn't have to be that way.
If its true our words are destructive, how much more true is it that our words are healing? We have the power, with our words, to build up, to better, to bless, to encourage. We can shape the future into a beautiful place just by changing the way we talk.
When you take the time to build someone up, you are bringing life to them. You are bringing health and wholeness to them. This isn't just in theory, it's been shown scientifically. There is a great power in our tongues, the question is will we use it wisely?
Prayer - Father, help us to see the power that you've given us. Help us to use our tongues to build others up, to encourage them, to bring life to them. Help us to put away the slanderous talk, the hurtful speech and the violent rhetoric. Father, heal our nation, families and friends through the words that you give us. We love you. Amen.
