Ask Me For The Nations
"Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession." Psalm 2:8
If you could ask God for one thing, what would it be? Would it be money? Power? Wealth? There have been many people who have treated God like a genie in a lamp. They expect for Him to grant their wildest wishes and get mad when he seemingly doesn't respond.
But what if there was something God wanted you to ask him for, like a gift that he has for you and all you need to do to receive it, is to ask for it? God tells us in this verse today to ask for the nations. In other words, he owns the nations and he wants to give them to you as a gift.
Now this has to be done in the proper way of course. Satan comes to Jesus and offers him the nations during the time of temptation in the wilderness. He says, just bow down to me and all of this will be yours. But Jesus rightly refuses. Jesus knows that Satan is not the true ruler of this world, God is. So Jesus waits. His Father will give him the nations, he just needs to be faithful.
The Prophet Daniel got a vision of this many years before. He saw the Son of Man receive the nations as he came on the clouds to meet with the Ancient of Days. The Son of Man received the nations and all the people worshipped him (Daniel 7). The beauty of this is that God himself owns the nations. He is the sovereign ruler and his kingdom doesn't end. It's passed along to his children. His Son was the first to inherit the nations. We are God's children. We are heirs.
Romans 8:17 - "...and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ..."
The inheritance that we receive, we receive because we are his children. The Proverbs teach us that a good man will give an inheritance to his children's children. This inheritance is multi-generational. It's meant to be passed down from generation to generation. It wasn't a blessing just to one group, it was designed to be a blessing for thousands of years.
Our inheritance, in part, is the nations of this world. It is the people. Essentially, we get to receive people into his kingdom, his family, and their lives are forever blessed by the Lord himself. Our role is to announce this good news to everyone who will listen. To offer them the same inheritance that we ourselves have received, which is the Lord and being adopted into his family.
Prayer - Father, I ask of you for the nations as an inheritance. Help me to participate with you in your harvest. Thank you for giving me this invaluable gift. Thank you for helping me to see that people are truly that important and that valuable. Help me to share this good news with all of those around me. Amen.
